Feet Love Cashmere - Day 8

More socks? Of course, more socks! Who's book/blog is this, anyway? What else would you expect? Today's yarn is Lion Brand Superwash Merino Cashmere, and there is enough here to knit the socks found on page 157 for most adults. The pattern makes it possible for you to knit socks for about everyone in the family, with a range of sizes (5.5 - 10 inches) and gauges (5 - 9 stitches per inch). It's a plug and play sort of pattern, or as Wiley calls them, a master pattern. The basic information is presented and you just find the numbers for your desired size and gauge, and knit away! Lion has surprised me of late with their entrance into the world of luxury, exotic and organic fibers.
This yarn is classic-worthy; a superwash merino, with nylon for stability and longevity, and just enough cashmere to make your fingers (and toes) say "Ooo...soft!" Today's lucky winner will receive three balls of this yarn in the color slate, along with a signed copy of Teach Yourself Visually Circular Knitting! Lucky winner!
Maybe a knitting question today... What was the first knitted project you created, start to finish? Remember to leave a comment below answering the question of the day in order to win today's prize!

My first knitting project was a a short sleeve sweater on size 10 needles. I was so much fun I haven't stopped!

  3. It's been awhile...but I'm pretty sure it was a cotton dishcloth. To this day, they are my preference to use in the kitchen over the "store bought" ones.

  4. A striped scarf made out of Mission Falls superwash!

  5. My first FO was a scarf that was way too wide and way too long! Thanks for the opportunity to try this yarn!

  6. My first project was a hat. I ended up making them for both my toddler daughters. Best of all, they loved them!

  7. My first knitting project was a hooded baby sweater with a zipper in the back. I think it still is one of the nicest things I've done.

  8. My first knitting project was leper bandages for church missions project. They were made of cotton thread and had to be perfectly even in width (said Auntie Gertrude). I wan young and not good at consistent gauge yet, so she kept ripping out my work.

No wonder I preferred crochet for many years.

  9. Ack! first one ever finished?? It was either Marc's Much Loved Sweater made in the late 70's or one of two vests I made for him that remain until this day in the wearing rotation. I honestly don't remember if the vests came before the cardigan or I just jumped right in there.

  10. The very first knitting project I completed was a lap blanket for my Baby. She is now 4.

  11. I suspect like most people...a scarf. Actually there were many, many scarves before I decided that I needed to try something else!

  12. I can't remember back that far!! It was probably something for my Barbie doll.

  13. I have no idea! I was only five years old. However I started knitting again about 2 years ago and the first thing I made was a scarf.

I was about 8 years old and it was a garter stitch scarf, full of holes! ;)

  15. It was a teeny onsie for my firstborn son, which fit him for approximately 20 minutes.

  16. Honestly? The first thing I knit ended up being a holey amoeba shaped "towel" that I hung in my kiddos play kitchen. It was made of RH Super Saver and nearly scratched my finger off trying to make it through the skein.

  17. A pair of baby socks for my grandson who was still in the NICU weighing in at 3.4 lbs. That was 4 yrs ago. He's hell on wheels now!

  18. Omigosh! More great giveaways. Hmm... maybe a hat for a friend's baby? Can't quite remember, although I do know I started but did not finish a few projects before that one!

  19. My first knitting project was this warm waterbag cozy.

I used only purl and stockinette stitches. But loved the result.

It was the start of so much happy knittings!

  20. It was a scarf. Do I dare add that it was made with Fun Fur?!

In my defense, I'm now a self proclaimed yarn snob!

  21. Very 1st knitted item from start to finish was a lap afghan for a lady at church. It went so fast and easy, I was hooked on knitting

  22. First knitting project was a sweater to fit the HULK! I was teaching myself, while living in Germany.
It was quite a learning experience to say the least. I later took it apart, never to use again. I love the beautiful yarn, ever so often I take it out to caress. That was some 50+ yrs ago.Yes, I am truly a very gifted knitter and YARN snob!

  23. My first project was a tiny knitted sweater for my first baby - 16 years ago!

  24. It was a bright green scarf in garter stitch. I was in elementary school and a nice neighbor taught me.

My mother passed away a few years ago. I found this scarf and my first needles while cleaning out my mother's home. She had saved it so now I am saving it!

  25. Fingerless gloves... Knit in the round. A little challenging to say the least!

  26. My first project was a garter knit scarf in 1999. It was just awful. Acrylic yarn, wavy edged from adding and dropping stitches, and I had only had a book to learn from.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My first knitted project was a small felted purse - the felting covered a multitude of bad early stockinette sins!

  28. My first start-to-finish knitted project was a ribbed hat and striped scarf for my sister. She promptly lost them both.

  29. Sooooooooooooooo long ago: An afghan (manymany cables and bobbles)in all-that-was-available R*d <3. It has seen a lot of wash and wear and still looks like new 35 years later. I'm amazed every time I see it (I made it for my parents).

  30. A dishcloth of course, second project was two at a time socks!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The first completed knitted project was a baby blanket for my daughter while I was still pregnant. After the blanket, I made a couple of pairs of booties. I really loved knitting those projects and really loved knitting from then on--my daughter (third child) is now 36 years old.

  32. I hadn't heard of this yarn before; sounds yummy!

The first knitting project I created in recent history (after re-teaching myself to knit as an adult, using Lion Brand's online tutorial) was a bias scarf.

  35. I think the first one I did...actually, I think it was before I consider myself to have "started knitting"--I made one of those grocery bags on huuuuuuge needles. I made two of them, actually, and dyed them and gave them to my two best friends. I must have been fourteen?

  36. My very first was the project my grandmother taught me to knit on when I was 10 years old, a pair of slippers. The first one turned out great...she was there to answer my questions. The second one on my own didn't go quite as good, but it was still finished.

  37. My first completed project was a simple drop stitch scarf using a bulky, multi-color yarn I found on clearance. Unfortunately it was not loved, and I frogged it. It memorialized in pictures though.

  38. Well, a pair of sox, what else! !
This was back, I mean waaay back in the late-50s/early-60s.
Made a pair for the boyfriend, just like all the gals were doing those days.
I think I just may be in love with this yarn.
    hugs,
    Gerry

  39. If we're talking start, as in design, to finish, as in use, it would have to be my I Killed A Muppet Bag. It didn't turn out quite the way I thought it would, but I love it.

I realize the two "I'm making it up as I go along" afghans I made for the babies I was expecting don't count, because they're crochet, and, eek! acrylic! (But they're still in use, 12 and 16 years later.)

  40. My first project was a hat, knit in the round, for my then newborn son. He's almost 7 now! I had so much fun learning to knit. I took a class with a dear friend of mine at our LYS. Fast forward about 5 years and one more son from that first class and I found myself working PT at the same LYS (new owner by tha time.

1974- I was 16 and created a VERY longt garter stitch scarf in changing neon bright colors-purple, yellow, orange, red, etc.

  42. Learned to knit very easy-to-do slippers when I was about 9.

  43. My first knitting project was a scarf and hat set knit with another Lion Brand Yarn, Homespun. It was for my daughter away at college in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

  44. The first project I completed was a hat for my nephew which I knit flat

  45. Well there were several false starts whhen I was a teen but I believe my 1st start to finish project was a sweater I made Freshman year in College from yarn purchased at Webs when they were in Amherst!

    ReplyDelete
  46. My first actual project was a scarf that I knit in seed stitch out of a skein of white dazzleaire. That was in the early 80's and I still have it but don't use it anymore. I have too many nice wool scarves now.

  47. To re-acquaint myself with knitting, I made my nieces scarves. Then, I used Red Heart Plush in cream, tan and dark brown, all three colors at once, to knit a basket-weave pattern blanket that will fit my queen size bed. That was all leading up to a shawl-collared sweater for my husband.

  48. My first project was a pair of socks! I knitted one whole pair, start (learning to knit from scratch) to finish. I made them last year, so far it is the only project I have finished! I'm about to start my second pair of socks.

Believe it or not, my first project was a sweater. The friend who taught me to knit didn't believe in scarves . . .

  50. My first finished project was an intarsia sweater for my son, with several large crayons in a row on the front of it.

  51. I made scarf when I started knitting in December, and I wore it every day for the rest of the winter! I used Lion brand homespun on acrylic needles, size 10 I think.

My first knitted project was a scarf done in fisherman's rib. It took forever. It was soon followed by an Aran style afghan knit in Lion's brand fisherman's wool.
Hmmm. What's with the fishermen? Neither I nor my DH fish.

That Aran style afghan was the whole reason I learned to knit. A friend of mine had made herself one and I wanted one like it.

  53. Oh gee. I think it was a brown acrylic double sided pot holder.

That or a red sweater made with insufficient leftover acrylic yarn.

    Either sounds hideous!

  54. Garter stitch baby booties that look like Dutch shoes or duck feet, depending on who you ask!

I think it was a large granny square that kept growing and growing into a lapghan. I was a very young teenager - 13, 14ish.

Oh, and I still have the square :^)

  56. I don't remember my first project, possibly because it was some 50 years ago, but it was probably doll clothes or blanket. Actually, I learned many of my knitting skills by making Barbie Doll clothes for my daughter. It was quick and easy to learn on such small items, no hassle to rip it out and start over.

  57. The first project I remember was a baby blanket. Yes......it was so long ago..... ;-)

  59. While waiting for DD to be born, I made DS (almost 2 yo at the time) a hat using a modified ball pattern that I saw on The Carol Duvall show. I made it a little longer than the pattern called for and he even wore it this past winter (he's almost 6 yo now).

  60. A knitted bandana from Stitch N' Bitch. I made it with Lion Brand Wool-ease.

  61. I made a single garter stitch scarf using Plymouth Encore yarn and size 8 needles! It's rather pathetic looking but I use it!

    ReplyDelete
  62. A novelty yarn garter stitch scarf that I still wear today. I combined 2 yarns from Crystal Palace (Little Flowers and Mikado Ribbon) and used large needles (I believe it was either a US 13 or 15).
