Feet Love Cashmere - Day 8
More socks? Of course, more socks! Who's book/blog is this, anyway? What else would you expect? Today's yarn is Lion Brand Superwash Merino Cashmere, and there is enough here to knit the socks found on page 157 for most adults. The pattern makes it possible for you to knit socks for about everyone in the family, with a range of sizes (5.5 - 10 inches) and gauges (5 - 9 stitches per inch). It's a plug and play sort of pattern, or as Wiley calls them, a master pattern. The basic information is presented and you just find the numbers for your desired size and gauge, and knit away! Lion has surprised me of late with their entrance into the world of luxury, exotic and organic fibers.
This yarn is classic-worthy; a superwash merino, with nylon for stability and longevity, and just enough cashmere to make your fingers (and toes) say "Ooo...soft!" First knitting project was a little purse - made with Encore yarn.
ReplyDeleteMy first knitting project was a a short sleeve sweater on size 10 needles. I was so much fun I haven't stopped!
ReplyDeleteIt's been awhile...but I'm pretty sure it was a cotton dishcloth. To this day, they are my preference to use in the kitchen over the "store bought" ones.

ReplyDeleteMy first knitting project was leper bandages for church missions project. They were made of cotton thread and had to be perfectly even in width (said Auntie Gertrude). I wan young and not good at consistent gauge yet, so she kept ripping out my work.

Ack! first one ever finished?? It was either Marc's Much Loved Sweater made in the late 70's or one of two vests I made for him that remain until this day in the wearing rotation. I honestly don't remember if the vests came before the cardigan or I just jumped right in there.

ReplyDeleteI have no idea! I was only five years old. However I started knitting again about 2 years ago and the first thing I made was a scarf.

ReplyDeleteHonestly? The first thing I knit ended up being a holey amoeba shaped "towel" that I hung in my kiddos play kitchen. It was made of RH Super Saver and nearly scratched my finger off trying to make it through the skein.
ReplyDeleteA pair of baby socks for my grandson who was still in the NICU weighing in at 3.4 lbs. That was 4 yrs ago. He's hell on wheels now!

I used only purl and stockinette stitches. But loved the result.

ReplyDeleteFirst knitting project was a sweater to fit the HULK! I was teaching myself, while living in Germany.
ReplyDeleteIt was quite a learning experience to say the least. I later took it apart, never to use again. I love the beautiful yarn, ever so often I take it out to caress. That was some 50+ yrs ago.Yes, I am truly a very gifted knitter and YARN snob!
My first project was a tiny knitted sweater for my first baby - 16 years ago!

ReplyDeleteMy mother passed away a few years ago. I found this scarf and my first needles while cleaning out my mother's home. She had saved it so now I am saving it!
Fingerless gloves... Knit in the round. A little challenging to say the least!
ReplyDeleteMy first project was a garter knit scarf in 1999. It was just awful. Acrylic yarn, wavy edged from adding and dropping stitches, and I had only had a book to learn from.

ReplyDeleteSooooooooooooooo long ago: An afghan (manymany cables and bobbles)in all-that-was-available R*d <3. It has seen a lot of wash and wear and still looks like new 35 years later. I'm amazed every time I see it (I made it for my parents).

ReplyDeleteThe first completed knitted project was a baby blanket for my daughter while I was still pregnant. After the blanket, I made a couple of pairs of booties. I really loved knitting those projects and really loved knitting from then on--my daughter (third child) is now 36 years old.

I think the first one I did...actually, I think it was before I consider myself to have "started knitting"--I made one of those grocery bags on huuuuuuge needles. I made two of them, actually, and dyed them and gave them to my two best friends. I must have been fourteen?
ReplyDeleteMy very first was the project my grandmother taught me to knit on when I was 10 years old, a pair of slippers. The first one turned out great...she was there to answer my questions. The second one on my own didn't go quite as good, but it was still finished.
ReplyDeleteMy first completed project was a simple drop stitch scarf using a bulky, multi-color yarn I found on clearance. Unfortunately it was not loved, and I frogged it. It memorialized in pictures though.

If we're talking start, as in design, to finish, as in use, it would have to be my I Killed A Muppet Bag. It didn't turn out quite the way I thought it would, but I love it.
ReplyDeleteI realize the two "I'm making it up as I go along" afghans I made for the babies I was expecting don't count, because they're crochet, and, eek! acrylic! (But they're still in use, 12 and 16 years later.)
My first project was a hat, knit in the round, for my then newborn son. He's almost 7 now! I had so much fun learning to knit. I took a class with a dear friend of mine at our LYS. Fast forward about 5 years and one more son from that first class and I found myself working PT at the same LYS (new owner by tha time.

ReplyDeleteMy first actual project was a scarf that I knit in seed stitch out of a skein of white dazzleaire. That was in the early 80's and I still have it but don't use it anymore. I have too many nice wool scarves now.
ReplyDeleteTo re-acquaint myself with knitting, I made my nieces scarves. Then, I used Red Heart Plush in cream, tan and dark brown, all three colors at once, to knit a basket-weave pattern blanket that will fit my queen size bed. That was all leading up to a shawl-collared sweater for my husband.

ReplyDeleteI made scarf when I started knitting in December, and I wore it every day for the rest of the winter! I used Lion brand homespun on acrylic needles, size 10 I think.
ReplyDeleteMy first knitted project was a scarf done in fisherman's rib. It took forever. It was soon followed by an Aran style afghan knit in Lion's brand fisherman's wool.

That Aran style afghan was the whole reason I learned to knit. A friend of mine had made herself one and I wanted one like it.
Oh gee. I think it was a brown acrylic double sided pot holder.

I don't remember my first project, possibly because it was some 50 years ago, but it was probably doll clothes or blanket. Actually, I learned many of my knitting skills by making Barbie Doll clothes for my daughter. It was quick and easy to learn on such small items, no hassle to rip it out and start over.

ReplyDeleteWhile waiting for DD to be born, I made DS (almost 2 yo at the time) a hat using a modified ball pattern that I saw on The Carol Duvall show. I made it a little longer than the pattern called for and he even wore it this past winter (he's almost 6 yo now).

ReplyDeleteI made a single garter stitch scarf using Plymouth Encore yarn and size 8 needles! It's rather pathetic looking but I use it!
ReplyDeleteA novelty yarn garter stitch scarf that I still wear today. I combined 2 yarns from Crystal Palace (Little Flowers and Mikado Ribbon) and used large needles (I believe it was either a US 13 or 15).
